To keep it simple, HomePlugs are either a hit or miss. More often than not they miss, so stick with a router.
The main reason behind the low throughput performance of HomePlugs is due to the fact that the signals travel through the electrical wiring in your house. This signal will be degraded due to interference from the various other household appliances that are also plugged into this wiring infrastructure.
I highly recommend to either use a wired connection, or wireless if your router has excellent wireless performance. If using wireless, make sure the router is placed in a central location of the house with a direct line of sight to your device for best coverage!
